"There was a big step – jump – that people have questioned," Jackson says. "But now the world is awash with oil and it's not clear that the same calculations still apply."

That said, it's important to recognize that locking in itself is not bad. It does, in fact, serve an important purpose to ensure that applications properly and orderly consume or produce data.
